5 career tips to help you understand your true value & marketability

Over the course of a 25-year career you’re bound to learn a few things, right?

The answer is definitely yes; and I’d like to share with you the 5 most important things I have learned during my time in the international world of MarComms:

1. Knowledge is power

Your skills, knowledge, and competency are invaluable intellectual property. Frequent training and education including e-learning, short courses, business and personal development keynotes, in-house training, and hot-group participation, all show that you are invested in your own development and guarantee you will stand out from the crowd.

2. Who do you know?

Colleagues and contacts are your own personal networking database. These links and connections make you unique and can give you an edge over your competitors. Further, if you nurture your contacts, they will become helpful allies – as friends, perhaps a fellow employee, supplier, or even client.

3. The global stage

In todays’ globally competitive business world, whether we fully realise it or not, as individuals we are playing on a world stage. Seeking international knowledge and opportunities is immensely rewarding, and many employers recognise global experience as an exceptional asset.

4. Career strategy

When in school, we are faced with limited opportunities and are restricted to choosing subjects or courses we may not be passionate about. Fast forward a decade and it is exciting to know we can choose exactly which career path we want to follow. Make a list of companies you dream of working with, then design a plan as to how you will get there. Be 100% committed to your goals.

5. Energy and inspiration

Work-life balance is essential to good business practice. Seniors, fellow teammates, mentors and professional contacts, combined, can challenge, motivate and inspire you. Couple this with regular exercise and a balanced diet to ensure that you have the energy and clear mind to take on the challenges you will face whilst developing yourself and your career.

Today, more than ever — impacted by global awareness, technology and Gen-Y —the workplace environment is changing. The relationship between employers and employees has altered and as a result the focus is not what your employer can do for you, but rather, what you can do for them. Invest in yourself as an asset and market yourself to the world.

Follow my tips above to understand your true value and potential marketability and please share any extra tips you have in the comments below on what you’ve learnt that others can take and apply to themselves.
